Most AI companion apps are still a text box. You type, a reply appears, and after a while the spell breaks because you are reading, not talking. The best AI companion apps instead use voice and faces, and a few have crossed into live video, where an AI persona looks back at you and answers in real time.
Atmee sits at that front edge. You press call and a face appears on screen that talks to you, listens, and holds a real face-to-face conversation — closer to a video call with a friend than to messaging a bot. That is the lens we used to rank everything below: how close does each app get to a real conversation, and who is each one actually for.
We looked at six companion apps across conversation quality, memory, free tiers, safety, and modality (text, voice, or live video).
How we ranked these apps
Four things separate a companion you keep from one you delete in a week.
- Memory — will it remember what you told it last Tuesday?
- Conversation quality — do replies feel specific instead of canned?
- Access — are free tiers available so you can try before you buy?
- Safety and data — how the app handles your intimate data.
- Modality — we weighted this on top, since a live voice or a face changes the experience more than any feature list.

Best for live face-to-face conversation: Atmee

Atmee is the most realistic AI companion app that lets you have real-time video conversations with a face that looks back at you. You open the app, press call, and an AI persona appears on screen. It responds to what you say, holds eye contact, and reacts like a real person. No text-only chat. No pre-recorded clips. Just a live face-to-face conversation.
The app gives you a few signature personas — Master Merl (for all you D&D fans out there), Laura Quin, your favorite next-door neighbor, and Krystal Choi for the K-pop crowd — plus historical figures and fictional characters.
But the real power is the Creator Studio. In less than 5 minutes, you can build your own AI twin from a selfie, a voice clip, and some personality inputs. Did we mention there's no coding required?
Don't just take our word for it. Even poker legends like Phil Hellmuth can't get enough of AI.
What makes Atmee stand out is the trust layer. Atmee is the first live AI platform to implement a "Verified" badge check, so you can be sure your favorite celebrities and creators gave their thumbs up. We wanted to make sure only authorized versions — not deepfakes of people — showed up in the feed.
For creators with large followings, Atmee also shares revenue directly with avatar owners — another first of its kind in this space.
Best part: signing up is free, forever. The free tier lets you explore the platform and sample community avatars. Sessions with Signature Avatars — the verified personas of real creators and public figures — use credits, which you can earn or top up starting from $9/mo on the Plus plan.

Best established text companion: Replika

Replika is the app that made "AI friend" a household phrase. It pairs text and voice chat with a customizable 3D avatar and an AR mode, and it has years of polish behind its emotional-support reputation. By default your Replika is a friend. Romantic and partner modes, voice calls, and the advanced features sit behind Replika Pro, so the free version is more of a preview than a full relationship.
Two things to note. Replika heavily restricted its romantic and adult content back in 2023, which upset many long-time users. It is mature and capable, but it is not the open-ended companion some remember. Pro runs about $19.99 per month or roughly $69.99 per year, with a higher Ultra tier around $29.99 per month; the lifetime plan was discontinued for new buyers in 2025.

Best for character chat and creativity: Character.AI

Character.AI is where you go to talk to millions of user-made characters, from anime leads to study tutors.
In 2025 and 2026 it added voice calls, in-chat image creation, and an animated avatar model called AvatarFX, so it is no longer text only. It stays strictly filtered, with no adult content, which keeps it friendlier for younger and general audiences but frustrates roleplayers who hit the filter mid-scene.
The free tier works but with mid-chat ads and a virtual currency gating some actions. The paid plan, c.ai+, has straightforward pricing at $9.99 per month or $94.99 per year. We note some additional safety issues with Character.AI, covered in the safety section.

Best memory: Nomi AI

If the thing that breaks immersion for you is an app forgetting your life, Nomi AI is built around memory. Reviewers consistently rate its long-term recall and emotional continuity at the top of the category. It supports friend, romantic, and mentor relationships, offers voice calls and AI selfies, and lets you keep multiple companions and group chats. It is also uncensored, which some people want and others do not.
The catch is the free experience is thin, often a brief trial or a small message allowance, so you reach the paywall fast. Nomi runs a single paid tier, reported around $15.99 per month or $99.99 per year, with some regional variation and no lifetime option.

Best for deep customization: Kindroid

Kindroid is the power-user pick. Its character creation runs to dozens of parameters, and its layered "Cascaded Memory" is widely cited as the most convincing long-term memory available, holding context across weeks. You get text, voice calls, image creation, and group chats, and it allows mature roleplay for adults. The trade-off is that image generation can be slow and the learning curve is real.
The free "Lite" tier gives unlimited messages on a smaller model with tight limits on selfies and audio. The standard plan is $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year on the web, with optional Ultra and MAX add-ons, and higher prices through the App Store.

Best for romance-focused chat: Candy AI (18+)

Candy AI is built for romantic and adult roleplay for users 18 and over, with realistic image creation, voice messages, and even short generated video clips. It is one of the more polished apps in that lane, and its annual plan is aggressive at about $5.99 per month billed yearly, versus $12.99 month to month. We mention it because it leads its niche, not because it fits everyone.
The free tier is deliberately restrictive: five messages a day, no adult content, and blurred images, designed to push you to pay. Heavy use of images and voice runs on a token system that can quietly add $20 to $30 a month on top.
Note these clips are pre-made media, not a live two-way video call.

Safety and privacy: read this before you pick
This is the part most "best of" lists skip, and it is the most important. In 2024, Mozilla reviewed eleven romantic AI chatbots and gave every single one its privacy warning label, finding that the majority may share or sell your data and that more than half do not let you delete it.
One app fired off more than 24,000 trackers within a minute of use. In late 2025, two companion apps leaked tens of millions of private messages and hundreds of thousands of photos through misconfigured servers.
The harms are not only about data. In January 2025, advocacy groups filed an FTC complaint accusing Replika of deceptive marketing and manipulative upsells. More seriously, Character.AI faced wrongful-death lawsuits after the 2024 suicide of a 14-year-old user, and in January 2026 it and Google agreed to settle those cases; Character.AI has since restricted under-18 access.
This is the backdrop for why Atmee builds identity verification in: a "Verified by Atmanity" badge confirms a real, consenting person is behind an avatar, which is a different posture than the anonymous, data-hungry norm. Whatever you choose, check the app's data deletion policy and never assume an emotional-support label means clinical safety.
How to choose the right one for you
Start with how you want to interact. If you want to read and type, Character.AI and Replika are the safe, mainstream picks.
If memory and continuity matter most, Nomi and Kindroid lead.
If you want a romantic companion, Candy AI owns that lane for adults.
And if you want the experience that actually feels like a conversation — a live face that talks back in real time — that is where Atmee is different from everything else here. Most companion apps are still asking you to imagine the other person. Atmee puts them on the screen.
The easiest way to feel the difference is to open Atmee and start a call.

- Can you video call an AI companion?
- Yes, but only on a few apps. Most companions are text or voice, and some, like Replika, show an animated avatar during voice calls. Atmee is built for real-time, two-way video calls where an AI persona responds to you live.
- What is the best free AI companion app?
- Character.AI and Kindroid offer the most usable free tiers, though both have added limits. Replika is free for text but paywalls its main features.
- Which AI companion remembers the most?
- Nomi AI and Kindroid are repeatedly rated best for long-term memory, with Kindroid's layered memory holding context across weeks.
- Are AI companion apps safe?
- Treat them with caution. Mozilla flagged the entire romantic-companion category for poor privacy in 2024, and there have been real data leaks and lawsuits. Check each app's data deletion policy and prefer apps with identity and safety controls.
